Although it wasn't up and running at the time of writing, the addition of Uru Live should address the single-player game's problem of an almost unpopulated game world, as it aims to let you work with other human players to solve puzzles and explore more new areas. Undoubtedly, Uru's graphical maturity and the online aspect will attract new players, but the slow pace of it all will no doubt put action junkies off completely.
For the fans it's a real gem, but if you're a point-and-click purist, you simply may not get it. Not The most obvious choice for budget game of the month, but hey, it's a lean time of year. All the big Christmas releases have come and gone, leaving us just a few scant morsels for January.
Indeed, this is perhaps the most impressive game in the Myst cannon so far, and has plenty to offer if you're looking for a slower-paced style of adventuring. Like, say, elderly historians or library folk. The environments are typically sumptuous and detailed, but are now navigable in true 3D, with an actual third-person character no less a first for the series. Other achievements are many: an extremely minimal interface with no inventory, a compelling and imaginative storyline and some genuinely intelligent puzzles are all here.
Unfortunately, Uru was originally intended as a primer for an online game that never eventuated, and as such is a bit short on content hours at best. This has been partially rectified by the free add-on Uru: To D'ni and the retail expansion pack The Path Of The Shell, but the game still feels a bit sparse. There are also more traditional puzzles with high complexity. The plot tells of the discovery of the underground city of the D'ni civilization.
Its representatives hired the main character as an independent expert. The user is allowed to explore the settlement and its surroundings, as well as learn the prehistory of the ancient people and its future fate.

URU remembers any puzzles you've completed, so the lack of save slots doesn't really amount to too much bother, but some of the puzzles are the kind that reset completely if you do something wrong, and it would've been nice to be able to save and reload in the middle of the puzzle. As you're traveling through the four Ages, you'll come across Relto pages, which are used to spruce up your personal Age. One Relto page creates a waterfall, while another allows you to turn rain on and off.
If these serve any real purpose other than decoration, it definitely wasn't obvious in the single-player game. Perhaps their purpose will be better explained when URU Live is up and running. You won't find a lot of voice acting in URU, but what's there is topnotch. The real difference between URU and previous Myst titles is that now the stunning graphics and sound aren't quite as unique as they once were.
Many titles look and sound at least as good as URU does, so while you won't find anything to complain about technically, you also won't be as wowed as you once were.
For better or worse, Myst has always been known for its puzzles and well-hidden clues. To its credit, URU has a lot of rather sensible clues that can be figured out with a bit of thought. Still, you'll want voodoo dolls of the developers for some of the puzzles, especially those that require you to play soccer! You have no inventory in URU, and can't pick up anything up, so you're relegated to kicking objects until they're in the right spot.
